Combating terrorism & bilateral ties high on agenda during India-Saudi Arabia talks

Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh arrived in Riyadh on Saturday evening on a three day official visit to the Saudi Arabia. He was received by Saudi crown prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud at the Riyadh airport. Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma and Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor are part of the delegation.Apart from economic cooperation and energy security, the terrorism and cooperation in security with special reference to the situation in Afghanistan and the Middle East region will be the key issues that India and Saudi Arab are likely to discuss during the visit. Riyadh and New Delhi are expected to sign agreements including an extradition treaty, agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons, agreement on scientific cooperation, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in peaceful use of outer space, MoU on cooperation in IT and services, and scientific cooperation. While Indian premier and Saudi king are likely to discuss a range of bilateral, regional and international issues including Palestine, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Yemen, a contract to set up a 680 million dollars joint investment fund is also expected to be signed during the visit.Dr. Singh will deliver a speech at the Shoura Council in which he will share his perspectives on Saudi-Indian ties apart from addressing the captains of business and industry at Saudi Chamber of commerce. The Prime minister will wrap up his three-day visit to Riyadh on 1st March immediately after meeting the Indian community the same day.
