Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that the implementation of the 6th East Asia Summit Declaration on ASEAN Connectivity requires a sense of greater urgency in terms of priorities. Addressing the 8th East Asia Summit in Bandar Seri Begawan, capital of Brunei, he said building of physical infrastructure needs to go hand-in-hand with creation of soft infrastructure along the connectivity corridors. He said that we must supplement our efforts with cooperation on the challenges of energy, food, health and human resource development. Dr. Singh said that the need for collective action, cooperation and collaboration in Asia Pacific region has never been felt more acutely. He said that global economic uncertainty and political turmoil in other parts of the world have impacted countries in our region equally. Dr. Singh said that East Asia Summit should strengthen efforts to counter threats of piracy, international terrorism, transnational crimes and drug trafficking. He said that the India welcome collective commitment to abide by and implement the 2002 Declaration on Conduct of Parties in South China Sea. He said also welcomed the adoption of the Declaration of the 8th East Asia Summit on Food Security. Prime Minister thanked EAS countries for their support for the establishment of Nalanda University as an international institution of excellence. He said that India has initiated the process of establishing a Virtual Knowledge Centre. Earlier Dr. Singh had bilateral talks with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
