Cold wave grips North India; Amitsar recorded lowest

Cold wave conditions in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh are continuing. The lowest minimum temperature recorded in Punjab is in Adampur near Jalandhar where people shivered at -0.6 degree celcius.Although there was some respite in industrial town Ludhiana and the former princely state Patiala where the temperature was recorded at 3.4 and 6.1 degree Celsius, a bit higher as compare to a day before, but the chill was enough for living beings to shiver. Amritsar was remained cold with 0.2 degree celcius. The Chandigarh recorded 1.2 degree celcius. In Haryana the Karnal was the coldest with 4.4 degree Celsius.Morning Fog is disrupting rail, road and air traffic. People are seen sitting near fire on the roadsides to warm themselves. Traders dealing in warm clothes are doing brisk business.In the Kashmir valley, the dry spell have increased the cold wave making lives of the people miserable. Weather Department has predicted that there will be no snowfall or rains during next 24 hours. Tourists places of Pahalgam and other adjoining areas are facing severe cold wave conditions and the temperature has dipped out to minus whereas day temperature is also around 7 degree celcius. The people of valley are facing power cut which had made the situation more bad. The Met Department has not predicted snowfall or rains in next 24 hours which may affect the weather condition in the whole valley.In Uttar Pradesh, spine chilling cold conditions continued to prevail in the eastern parts of the state. City of Taj Agra recorded the lowest temperature at 4.6 degrees Celsius. Night temperature fell appreciably in Allahabad division. The weather office has forecast that the cold day condition would likely abate over eastern-UP during the next two days.AIR Lucknow correspondent reports, death toll has reached 39 with 7 more deaths due to nippy weather in the state during last 24 hours. Heavy foggy conditions have badly disrupted rail and road traffic . In many districts school and colleges have been closed due to bad weather conditions.The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation has witnessed tripping of transmission lines due the deadly mix of heavy fog and air pollutants. The incident left large parts of western Uttar Pradesh power less for nearly five hours.In Uttarakhand, foggy conditions prevail in major parts of the state. Met department predicted cloudy sky during coming two-three days.A thick blanket of fog engulfed the city, reducing the visibility to as low as 50 metres this morning and throwing rail and air traffic out of gear.Dense fog started accumulating in the wee hours and reduced the visibility to 50 metres at 5.30 am, the Met department said. Today's fog is most dense in this season so far and it has been attributed to the condensation. The visibility is about 200 metre at this moment. The Met office said the fog condition will continue till 1 pm as there is not much wind. Mercury rose from yesterday's 6.6 degrees to settle at 8.4 degree Celsius. The thick cover of fog added to the woes of morning commuters and vehicles were seen plying with fog lights. The Met department's forecast said that there may be fog in the morning tomorrow while the maximum and minimum likely to hover around 20 and nine degrees.Meanwhile, dense fog and fault in instrument landing system brought the flight operations at the IGI airport to a halt leading to delay of all morning flights by upto three hours and diversion of 13 international ones. According to airport sources, no flights have taken off or landed since 2 am, when the runway visibility dropped to 100 metres and general visibility to less 50 metres. Also glitch in the cables connected to the instrument that measures and provides realtime runway visibility data to the Air Traffic Control tower, forced the officials to suspend the flight operations. 13 international flights were diverted to Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Mumbai. Visibility started to drop from 1.45 am and remained around 150 metres till 10 am, according to airport MeT department. AIR Jaipur correspondent Anurag Vajpayee reports that Northern parts of the state are reeling under cold and night temperatures are continuously decreasing in plain areas.Today the only hill station of the state Mount Abu was the coldest place with 4 degree Celsius. Cold wave situation is continuing at Sri Ganganagar and C huru with 5 and 6 degree Celsius temp. Jaipur is comparatively better where minimum temp. was recorded 11 degree Celsius today. According to met office temps. would decrease in next 24 hours and possibilities of rain in southern parts of the state.
