Cold wave continues to sweep several parts of country

Intense cold wave continued to sweep north India. The biting cold has claimed 12 lives in the region during the past 24 hours. While 11 people died in Uttar Pradesh, one person lost his life in Jammu and KashmirIn Uttar Pradesh, Churk town in the district of recorded 1.4 degree Celsius while Agra recorded 1.6 degree Celsius minimum temperature. According to met department the western and eastern parts of state recorded 2 to 5 degree Celsius below normal temperatures last night .The day temperature also went down by 8 to 12 degree Celsius below normal for last three days .Morning fog mainly in western parts of state once again badly hit road and rail traffic today.Due to weather several trains are already running late or rescheduled by the Railways.National Capital Delhi today recorded a minimum temperature of 4.3 degrees Celsius which was three degrees below normal. The early hours of the day also saw a layer of shallow fog around the city.Yesterday the minimum temperature was 5.3 degrees while maximum temperature was 14.5 degree Celsius.According to the weatherman, the conditions are not expected to improve much. The minimum tomorrow is likely to be around 5 degrees Celsius and maximum 15 degrees Celsius. Heavy snowfall from late last night to this morning has crippled the life in Ladakh Region of Jammu and Kashmir. AIR Correspondent reports, flight operations, the only link between Leh and other parts of the country has been cancelled due to heavy snowfall. The high altitude tribal areas in Himachal Pradesh reeled under freezing cold conditions as minimum temperatures dropped further, hitting normal life severely. Keylong, the headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti district, experienced the season's coldest day with the mercury dipping to minus 15 deg C. Other tribal areas recorded minimum temperatures in the range of minus 18 and minus 25 deg C. Surajtal and Chandratal lakes and 70-km stretch of Chandrabhaga river, a tributary of Spiti, have completely frozen.Cold wave continued unabated in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh with fog once again throwing normal life out of gear. Narnaul was the coldest place in Haryana with a minimum temperature of 0.5 deg C. In Punjab, Ludhiana recorded a low of 3.7 degree C. The minimum temperature in Chandigarh settled at 5.7 deg C.Cold waves continued in parts of Rajasthan where Jaisalmer recorded a low of 1.2 degrees Celsius, while Mount Abu settled at minus 3 deg C. Jaipur and Bikaner shivered at 1.4 degrees Celsius.In Madhya Pradesh, the cold wave conditions continue in most parts of the state. AIR Bhopal correspondent reports that in the wake of worsening cold wave conditions, the state government has ordered closure of all Aanganbadis till 16th of this month.In Rajasthan, temperatures have slightly increased in many parts of the State but the northern parts are still in the grip of cold wave. Today, Bikaner was the coldest place with zero degree Celsius while in hill station of Mount Abu, the temperature was minus two degree Celsius in the morning.Intense cold wave condition continues to severely affect normal life in Orissa with mercury dipping to below 10 degree Celsius in most parts of the state. People living in northern and western parts of the state are the worst hit as cold breeze and cloudy weather making their life miserable. Daringbadi in Kandhamal district of Orissa recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.5 degree Celsius in the last 24 hours with reports of snow fall in interior parts of the district. There is no respite even for the denizens of capital city Bhubaneswar with temperature dipping to 10.4, the lowest in this winter. Cities like Phulbani recorded 2.8 degree Celsius, Baripada 5.8, K Nuagaon 4.2, Titlagarh 6, Koraput 7.9, Sambalpur 5.8 and Sundergarh 5.4 degree Celsius breaking this season's record. The Bhubaneswar Meterological Office has predicted the intense cold wave condition to continue for the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, the state government has directed all the district collectors to distribute blankets to the poor people considering the cold wave condition.
