Cold wave continues to sweep North India; HP experiences fresh snowfall

Cold wave continued to sweep North India as Himachal Pradesh experienced fresh snowfall. The hills in Kangra, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Chamba and Kinnaur districts experienced moderate spell of snow yesterday. Widespread snowfall in apple-growing areas of Himachal Pradesh has brightened the prospects of a bumper crop production this year. People in Kashmir division faced problems of drinking water as the cold wave has freezed water in the pipes. Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest place in the Kashmir Valley with a night temperature of minus 13 deg C.Fresh light snow-fall has been received at Leh district of Ladakh region early Tuesday morning. AIR correspondent reports that this is the third snowfall of this season in the region.The cold wave in Punjab and Haryana intensified with minimum temperature in most parts of the region plunging by upto three degrees Celsius. In West Bengal, Darjeeling hills have witnessed snowfall for the second time this season at an altitude of 6,800 feet. Cold wave continues to seep Uttar Pradesh. AIR Correspondent reports that one more person died due to cold taking the toll to 133 this winter. Cold wave has intensified in Uttarakhand with fresh snowfall at higher reaches. Many link roads including Gangotri-Yamunotri highway have been closed following the snowfall.Continuous chilly winds on a sunny day kept the mercury low in the National Capital. In Rajasthan, Churu was the coldest place with a minimum temperature of 2.4 deg C.
