Cold intensifies in northern parts of country

Cold intensifies in northern parts of the country. Delhi continued to reel under cold wave today even as the mercury rose slightly to settle at 7.4 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature yesterday was 6.1 degrees, which was the season's lowest so far. Shallow fog reduced the visibility to 500 metres at 7.30 this morning, however, there is no report about any flight disruption due to the fog. Met department's forecast said that there may be mist in the morning tomorrow. The minimum and maximum temperature will be around six and 23 degree Celsius respectively. The Met department attributed the cold condition to snowfall in the upper reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. Cold conditions intensified in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh today with the minimum temperature plummeting by upto three degrees Celsius even as several parts of the region remained engulfed in dense fog. Normal life was disrupted in the morning as dense fog in several parts of the region, including Ambala, Hisar, Karnal, Rohtak, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala reduced visibility to just few metres. The ongoing spell of cold conditions have so far claimed three lives, including two in Bathinda and one at Yamuna Nagar in the past one week. In the plains of Punjab and Haryana, Amritsar was coldest with a low of 1.4 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal. The MET forecast fog, mist or haze and ground frost in many parts of the region during the next few days.<br/><br/>
