Cold conditions intensifies, icy winds chill Delhi

Cold wave conditions have intensified in most parts of north India with temperature falling in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and the national capital Delhi where icy winds from snow-capped mountains added to the discomfort of the people. Several trains are running late in the region.<br/><br/>Met office said, cold wave tightened its grip in parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh where the mercury fell by up to six notches below normal. In Amritsar, the minimum temperature was 0.6 degree Celsius, three degrees below normal. Ludhiana recorded a low of 3.6 C, while Patiala it was 3.1 deg C.<br/><br/>In Haryana, Ambala recorded a low of 1.3 deg C, six degrees below normal, while Chandigarh shivered at 3.8 deg C. Clear sky over Jammu and Kashmir led to severe cold wave in most parts of the state with minimum temperature in Kargil slipping to minus 14.4 deg C. In the nearby Leh district, the night temperature was minus 9.4 deg C. Pahalgam in south Kashmir continued to be the coldest place in the valley with a low of minus 5.3 deg C. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.4 deg C.<br/><br/>In Jammu region, Banihal was the coldest place with a minimum of minus 1.9 deg C. In Jammu, the night temperature dipped to 4.4 deg C. Katra, the base camp for Mata Vaishnodevi cave shrine, recorded a low of 6.4 deg C.<br/><br/>However, in Rajasthan mercury rose by a few notches, but Mt Abu remained the coldest place in the state with a minimum temperature of 4 deg C.<br/><br/>The national capital Delhi continued to reel under cold wave conditions following snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.<br/><br/>Icy winds from the snow-capped mountains in the northern states added to the chill and people preferred to remain indoors. A thin layer of fog also engulfed the city skyline in the morning reducing the visibility to 500 metres.<br/><br/>Mercury dropped marginally in Shimla because of cold winds while higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh continued to reel under sub-zero temperature.<br/><br/>Keylong, the headquarters of Lahaul & Spiti district, recorded night temperature of minus 6.4 deg C, making it the coldest place in the state. In Uttarakhand, dry cold conditions continued with state capital Dehra Dun recording a minimum temperature of 5 deg C.<br/>
