Union Environment and forest minister Jairam Ramesh today said that a new notification will regulate coastal zones for better balance in environmental protection and economic growth. Formally releasing the Coastal Regulations zone notification 2011 and Island protection zone notification 2011, Mr. Ramesh said the government is committed to protect the 7,500 kilometre coastline in the country. Mr. Ramesh said the new notification which has come into force today will protect the livelihood of over seven million fishermen families in the country. He also said the new notification which replaces coastal regulations zone 1991, will also protect marine bio diversity. The minister said it will also generate economic activity in coastal areas. Mr. Ramesh said the government is also working on a River regulation zone concept to protect the rapidly vanishing river beds of the country. In reply to a question, Mr. Ramesh said the Akshardham temple in Delhi did not apply for environmental clearance.
