The coast guard has ruled out that piracy is a threat to India. Addressing the annual press conference in New Delhi on Monday, the Director General of Indian Coast Guard, Mr. Anil Chopra said that though the Somalian pirates have moved from Gulf of Eden to Indian Ocean Region, they are not a threat to the Indian mainland as such. He added that in the absence of any proper government in Somalia, there is no control on the pirates from that country. Mr Chopra said that they are moving in the high seas in search of merchant vessels so that they can hold them for ransom. On being asked whether these pirates have any link with terror organisations, Mr. Chopra said that the investigations have not shown any link so far. Mr. Chopra said that vigorous surveillance is being maintained on the coastal line of India. He said that every day 20 ships and 20 aircraft are engaged in the surveillance. He further added that 30 new helicopters are being acquired besides 24 dornier aircraft. On post 26/11 security measures, he said that there are 32 post guard stations already commissioned along the coast line and 20 more will come within two years. He also said that the manpower will be tripled by 2020.
