COAI dismayed over fine on telcos, takes hands-off approach

Cellular Operators Association, COAI has expressed disappointment over the 3,050 crore rupees penalty recommended by TRAI on incumbent operators Airtel, Vodafone and Idea for allegedly denying interconnectivity to newcomer Reliance Jio. COAI Director General Rajan Mathews told a news agency that it is disappointed with recommendation of a large penalties on the industry as it is not a trivial amount. He also said the Department of Telecom will decide whether the amount is appropriate or not. Mr Mathews said the matter is between individual operators and TRAI.In a setback to incumbent telecom operators, the telecom regulator on Friday suggested a penalty of about 1,050 crore rupees each for Airtel and Vodafone, and 950 crore rupees in case of Idea Cellular.
