The Centre has convened a separate meeting of the Chief Ministers on the 5th of next month, to discuss the National Counter Terrorism Centre, NCTC. Speaking to newsmen in New Delhi today, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said, the Annual meeting of Chief Ministers scheduled for the 16th of this month, will also take place, however, a seperate meeting on NCTC has been called on May 5th, heeding to the request of three Chief Ministers. He said, the West Bengal Chief Minister had written to the Centre and the Prime Minister has agreed to the request for a separate Chief Minister's meeting. He said, all issues on the agenda will be throughly dissussed.
The Home Minister said, a standard operating protocol will also be worked out in discussion with the States ahead of the meeting. Mr. Chidambaram expressed hope that a consensus will evolve out of the Chief Minister's meeting on the anti-terrorism agency, NCTC.
The Home Minister pointed out that in 2011 alone, over a hundred terrorist incidents took place in the region, a bulk of which were in Afghanistan and Iraq, followed by India, Pakistan and Thailand. Mr. Chidambaram said, the region was the most vulnerable to terrorist attacks and hence, there is an urgent need to institutionalise the fight against Terrorism. He also said, it is proposed that the 32-member Standing Council of the NCTC, will have one Director and three Joint Directors, while the States will have 28 Members.
Replying to a query on Sri Lankan media report, the Home Minister termed it as baseless and said that there are no LTTE camps anywhere in India including Tamil Nadu.
