Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has written to his Tamil Nadu counterpart requesting her to consider the safety concern of the people of Kerala about Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki district.He urged J Jayalalitha to respond positively on humanitarian grounds. Meanwhile, Kerala government has decided to further increase electricity production from Idukki reservoir so that the water level of the dam comes down.This step is necessitated as disaster management step in case of an exigency situation related to the 116 year old Mullaperiyar dam.Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is reaching Delhi today to seek Prime Minister's intervention in the issue. A special session of the state assembly will be convened on 9th of this month and an all party meeting is also scheduled to take place on seventh.Meanwhile, the Kerala assembly speaker G Karthikeyan and minister P J Joseph visited satyagraha venue in Idukki today.The water level of the dam continues to be above the permissible level of 136 feet due to heavy rain in the dam and adjoining areas. Kerala is demanding an immediate reduction of the water level to 120 feet and construction of a new dam that can withstand earth quakes.
