Climate change: Environment Ministers of four BASIC countries deliberated on action plan

Environment Ministers of four BASIC countries today deliberated on a plan of action at the global and national level to tackle climate change. Speaking to newsmen in New Delhi today after a meeting sixth Ministerial meeting, Environment Minister Mr. Jairam Ramesh said issues like intellectual property rights and trade, which are very important for developing countries were not adequately addressed in the Cancun Agreements should form part of the future course of action. He said the ministers discussed the issue of financial support for climate change mitigation and adaptation actions. Mr. Jairam Ramesh said there was agreement that the adaptation issues should be accorded equal priority and the financing of adaptation actions should include a mechanism for loss and damage.Ministers from Brazil, South Africa, China and India who attended the conference stressed the need to maintain a balance between the obligations of the developed countries with those of developing countries. Representatives Argentina, Algeria and Maldives also participated in the meeting. AIR correspondent reports that the meeting assumes significance as it is the first major international conference of any group of countries since December last when Cancun agreements were reached.
