CJI for courts to act as deterrent in future to check crimes against women

Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir has strongly advocated for courts to act as deterrent in the future to check crimes against women. Inaugurating the first fast track court in Delhi this evening to hear rape cases and crimes against women, he said a serious message needs to be sent in dealing with such henious crimes.

He said there is need to pay greatest attention to crimes against women, elderly and children. But, he, asserted that speedy justice cannot be at the cost of fairness of the trial.

Expressing serious concern over increasing cases of crimes against women, the Chief Justice said laws are not implemented until something bad happens. On the demand for death penalty to rape convicts, he said balance needs to be maintained on the issue.

The case of gang rape and brutality inficted on 23-year-old medical student in Delhi last month will be the first case to be heard in this court located in the Saket Court Complex. Four more fast track courts will also become functional from tomorrow.

The Delhi Police plans to submit around 1000-page chargesheet in the metropolitan magistrate’s court in Saket tomorrow. Then, the case will be moved to the fast-track court to hear it on a day-to-day trial basis.
