Civilians killed in Afghanistan in NATO air strike

In Afghanistan, an unknown number of civilians have been killed in an air strike by NATO-led forces. A NATO statement said that the air strike was carried out on two vehicles initially believed to be carrying Taliban fighters in southern province of Helmand. The alliance says, it is investigating the strike, which occurred yesterday in Naw Zad district of the province. It said that the air strike followed intelligence suggesting a Taliban leader and his associates were in the vehicles. Civilian casualties are a sensitive subject in Afghanistan and the issue has created tension between Afghan government and its western counterparts in the past. Meanwhile, twenty two militants handed over their weapons and surrendered to government in northern Baghlan province yesterday. Police chief of Baghlan Abdul Rahman Rahimi said the men surrendered in Jelga district and promised to work for peace in their province. Twenty other militants had last Tuesday handed over their weapons and joined the Afghan peace process in the province.
