Civilian murders by US military unit a wake-up call for the US: Karzai

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has said that murders of civilians by a US military unit were a wake-up call for the US public about how its troops commit crimes in his country. Addressing a gathering in capital Kabul on Wednesday, Mr. Karzai said the detailed report and images of killings were disheartening and repulsive.Media reports said US troops, who were stationed in southern province of Kandahar early last year, allegedly killed a teenager and an elderly man in their villages and then tried to make the incidents look as though the soldiers were acting in self-defence. The Afghan President said he didn't want to repeat condemnations but it is necessary to awaken public conscience in the world. He said the American people, like the people in Afghanistan, are good people but he want them to know that a 15-year-old youth and an elderly man were brutalized in front of their families in Afghanistan. The US military has offered its apologies for the gruesome incidents. Last week, a military court in Washington sentenced one of the 12 troops facing trial, to 24 years in prison.
