Civil society can not be allowed to impose solutions in a democracy: Bhagwati

Renowned economist Professor Jagdish Bhagwati on Thursday said that civil society can not be allowed to impose solutions in a democracy like us.

Delivering the 24th Intelligence Bureau Centenary Endowment lecture in New Delhi, Professor Bhagwati however said, civil society can agitate and it can make suggestions. He said, civil society often called NGOs are an important supplement to the Parliamentary democracy.

He said, public have come to rely on using institutions like the judiciary or civil society to correct what might be called political failure to address compelling problems. Prof Bhagwati stressed that this intervention might make matters worse.

Speaking on designing institutions for governance reform, Prof Bhagwati said, judges must be exposed to training in the major fields like human rights that they invoke repeatedly.

He also highlighted country's leadership needs to focus on essential ways in which the country needs to reinforce the class and ethnic cohesion. Prof Bhagwati lauded the effort of the UPA government for introducing the Lokpal Bill to tackle corruption.
