Civil Nuclear Liability Bill tabled in LS

Government today introduced the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill, 2010 which will allow India after its passage to undertake civil nuclear commerce with 45 odd countries. Introducing the bill in the Lok Sabha, the Minister for State for Science and Technology, Prithviraj Chavan said that the bill is crucial for India's development and will be an important milestone for the country's energy security. He said that a new amendment to the clause 17 of the Bill was brought today, which is agreeable to both the BJP and the Left parties. Allaying the apprehensions of the Left parties that the bill is not aimed at helping any particular country, Mr. Chavan said that talks are on with France, Russia, Japan, America and other advanced countries for nuclear commerce. He said, the nuclear power production in the country will be enhanced from the present 4,500 MW to nearly 40,000 MW in the coming years. Earlier, Mr. Chavan met the CPI leader Sitaram Yechury and the CPI leader D. Raja to explain the government's view on the bill. He also had meetings with BJP leader Arun Jaitely to seek the main opposition party's support on the bill.
