Civil Aviation Minister rules out immediate privatization of Air India

The government has come out with a fresh draft policy in aviation sector, recommending listing of state-run Airports Authority of India and chopper firm Pawan Hans on stock exchanges . Unveiling the draft policy Minister for Civil Aviation , Ashok Gajapati Raju today said that the move has taken to improve transparency and efficiency of the aviation sector. The Minister said privatization of national carrier Air India will not happen immediately, but cannot be ruled out in future.

The draft policy is aimed at making aviation sector more vibrant and raising its potential. The Minister said that overall policy is expected to come in January next year after the proper consultation with the stakeholders. Terming UPA's aviation policy as opaque, the minister said now the NDA government is working on to develop a transparent policy.

Mr. Gajapati said that the new government will focus on public private partnership to develop airports. The draft policy has also suggested rationalizing cost of aviation turbine fuel, enhancing the regional connectivity and modernizing the navigation air services to international standards. It also proposed to develop six major metro airports as international hubs, create more airports through PPP mode, and promote air cargo. The government has also proposed to set up an internal committee for institutional reforms in the aviation sector.
