Citizenship row: Sibal calls up Anand

Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal today called up World Chess champion Vishwanathan Anand and assured him that the controversy over his citizenship will be resolved. Sibal said in New Delhi that he has apologised to Anand over the controversy over his citizenship, which led to problems of conferring of Doctorate degree by the University of Hyderanbad. Sibal said Anand will accept the Honorary Doctorate degree now. Sibal also said that he informed Anand about procedural error that led to problems. The move to confer an honorary doctorate on Vishwanathan Anand ran in to a controversy after the Union HRD Ministry raised doubts over the nationality of Anand, who holds an Indian passport but lives in Spain. The University of Hyderabad had to delay the function to confer the honour on him. This forced Anand to decline the honour.
