Citizens discover power of RTI Act in Assam

In Assam, the number of applications under Right to Information Act, RTI, has increased considerably in last three years.Talking to AIR, state Information Commissioner Mohan Chandra Malakar said that over 10,000 applicants have sough information under the act in that period. Assam has recorded a mark improvement in the implementation of RTI Act. A total of 7200 applications have been filed in the last year in comparison to 2425 in 2010. Official data revealed that most of the information seekers are from the rural areas. Most of the applicants have shown interest in rural development, education and public health engineering department. Kamrup, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Darrang districts are seen to be especially aware of the rights of citizen.The Commission also imposed fine of Rs 3 lakh to Public Information Officers who failed to provide information in stipulated time.
