CIC directs ED to make public estimates of black money stashed away in foreign banks

In a significant decision, the Central Information Commission has directed the Enforcement Directorate to make public the estimates of black money stashed away in foreign banks. Rejecting the argument of the ED that it was exempt from the disclosures under the RTI Act, a CIC Bench ruled that all such matters being investigated by the ED in matter of stashing away Indian money in foreign banks comes within the definition of allegations of corruption and should be disclosed. The CIC order said that while the ED may take the position that they have no way of assessing the total volume of illegally held black money by Indians in foreign banks , they can surely provide an estimate of the total volume of such money involved in the investigations they are presently conducting.
