Cholera death toll rises to 39 in Orissa

In Orissa, the cholera situation continues to be alarming in tribal-dominated Rayagada district with death toll rising to 39 and more than 782 affected. Considering the gravity of the situation state health and family welfare minister Prasanna Acharya and health secretary is rushing to the district tomorrow. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today took stock of the situation in Rayagada and directed concerned officials to send more doctors and medicines to the affected villages. Meanwhile, unofficial sources put the death toll more than 100 while more than 1500 people are affected in Rayagada district by the deadly cholera virus. More people are likely to be affected in the district as they are still consuming contaminated drinking water. The opposition Congress has requested union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to send a central medical team to Rayagada for immediate treatment of the affected tribal people. It has criticised the BJD government for organising rallies against the Centre on Pollavaram project neglecting the death of tribals due to cholera.
