Mahmudullah and Tamim Iqbal scored half centuries as Bangladesh ended the second day of the first Test at Chittagong at 179 for 4, in reply to South Africa's 248 all out. Resuming play at the overnight score of 7 for no loss, the hosts lost 2 wickets early. Mahmudullah and Tamim, then, resurrected the Bangladesh innings sharing 89 runs for the 3rd wicket. Mahmudullah made 67, while Iqbal scored 57. Later, rain interrupted play in the third session, ruining the home side's chances of pressing towards a lead. This is the first Test of the 2-match series. Before this, Bangladesh had recorded the 2-1 win over the Proteas in the 50-over format, their fourth consecutive ODI series win at home.
