Chinese Premier Jiabao’s visit to promote India-China cooperation

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday on a three-day state visit. In a statement immediately after his arrival, he said the objective of his visit is to promote friendship and expand cooperation between the two countries. He said that the visit will also open up new dimensions of partnership for mutual benefit and common development of the two countries.Chinese premier noted that the friendship and cooperation between the two sides has seen comprehensive and rapid progress. Addressing the Captains of Industy, Chinese Primier said there is enough space for both the two Asian nations to develop and prosper. The visiting Prime Minister added that both the countries stand to gain from economic cooperation. Making out a case for liberalising bilateral trade, he said, liberalisation of the markets hold huge potential for the domestic markets of the two countries. Though China has mooted the idea of free trade agreement, India has not favourably responded considering a huge trade imbalance to Indian industry. The Chinese Premier will hold delegation level talks with the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh tomorrow at Hyderabad House. The talks are likely to cover, trade imbalance ranging upto 19 billion dollars, stapple visa issue, access to Indian companies in the Chinese markets and boundary question. AIR correspondent reports that activities of Chinese firms in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and increasing military sales to Islamabad are also expected to be taken up at the high table. Strengthening people to people contact is the key to take forward the bilateral partnership. It is in this back drop , the decision of introducing Chinese in CBSC schools up to 8th class from next year is of prime importance. It will help minimise the barriers between the people of the two countries. The two countries need to take a leaf from American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson and study each other like science, law. This will pave the way for greater business exchanges and high volume of trade. China on its part has mooted the idea of a free trade agreement to enhance trade volume but Indian business community has still some apprehensions. India needs heavy Chinese investment especially in infrastructure sector on which the country plans to spend over 1 trillion us dollars in the next five years. New Delhi has so far signed free trade pact with 10-member ASEAN region, South Korea, Singapore and Sri Lanka while a similar pact with European Union, Japan and Malaysia is in the offing. The trade agreement with China may materialise only after trade imbalances are removed and both the countries remain sensitive to each others core concern's. It is expected that the present visit will be mile stone towards that direction. Ahead of talks, pacts worth 16 billion US dolllars were finalised on Wednesday on infrastructure and other sectors. These agreements were given the final touches following a meeting between the Trade ministers of the two countries in New Delhi on Wednesday. The two countries also decided to sign a Memorandum of Understanding for free flow of information and medical techniques with China Pharmaceutical Industry Association early next year. Secretary General IDMA Mr. Daara Patel said that the present medical trade between the two countries is pegged at 3.1 Billion Dollars. He added that the memorandum will make sharing of the information and manufacturing techniques easier that will further enhance the trade cooperation between the two countries. The Chinese Premier will be accorded ceremonial reception at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday. Later he will address Indian Council of World Affairs, spelling out his vision on India China relations. During his stay in New Delhi he will exchange views with other Indian leaders to strengthen bilateral partnership.
