Chinese police have nabbed nearly 2,200 suspected gang members and destroyed 18 gangs in a nationwide crackdown that started from the 1st of September. In a statement, the Ministry of Public Security today said a total of 270 triad gangs have been broken up since police from 11 provinces jointly started the crackdown. It said the ministry has ordered police to resolutely remove gangs' protective umbrellas, root out their financial resources and encourage the public to offer clues to help combat organized crime.China began to focus on fighting organized crime in 2006. Since then, police have disrupted more than 2,100 triad gangs and imprisoned nearly 520 ring leaders or key members.
