China has rejected a report that it is planning to dispatch troops to North Korea. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman today denied the claims in the report published by a South Korean newspaper as sheer fabrication. The report quoted a South Korean official as saying that Beijing and Pyongyang had recently discussed stationing Chinese troops in the North Korean city of Rason with the purpose of protecting Chinese-invested port facilities and Chinese nationals there.
