China plans to empower police to detain suspects up to 37 days

Chinese government’s planning to empower police to detain suspects up to 37 days without charge and without having to pay compensation. The plan has raised concerns that such powers could be misused to stem rising dissidence and protests. <br/><br/>Existing Law permits police to detain suspects for seven days. But if the suspect is believed to be involved in multiple or gang crimes, the detention can be extended for another 30 days. The plans to beef up the detention procedures came as the country witnessed increasing number of protests on various issues lately.<br/>
