China-Pak deal should be within IAEA purview: EU

Amid India's concerns over the China-Pakistan nuclear deal, the European Union has said any such agreement should respect the guidelines spelt out by the world nuclear watchdog IAEA. The visiting EU’s Representative for foreign affairs and security policy told this to reporters here in reply to a query in New Delhi. Catherine Ashton made it clear that the EU has no problems with peaceful use of nuclear energy but whatever arrangements are made have to be within the purview of the IAEA.
Ms. Ashton on a four day visit to India held extensive discussions with the Indian leaders on a host of issues. She urged them to join in its initiative on sharing of intelligence to counter terrorism and offered to deepen ties to tackle piracy in high-seas. Official sources said that during her discussions she conveyed her perceptions on the situation in the sub-continent, particularly in Afghanistan from where the international forces are expected to be withdrawn from next year. MS Ashton held talks with the external affairs minister Minister S M Krishna, Home Minister P Chidambarm and Overseas Indians Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.our Correspondent reports that Ashton’s visit first as EU representative for foreign affairs and security policy, is mainly seen as a run-up to the EU-India Summit meeting in Brussels in October. The bilateral trade between the 27-nation bloc and India is estimated to be over 50 billion dollars. The two sides agreed to double bilateral trade in another five years at the India-EU summit in Marseilles, France, in September 2008.
