The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today informed the Rajya Sabha that China has assured New Delhi that nothing will be done against the interest of India in the distribution of the Brahmaputra river waters. Intervening in the Question Hour, Dr Singh said that he had discussed the issue with the Chinese Premier during his last visit. The Prime Minister said, the government is verifying the facts relating to the distribution of Brahmaputra river waters. He suggested that in the larger interest of the country, it is not advisable to discuss such issues as they are likely to hurt the relationship between the two friendly neighbouring countries. He also said that the government will take maximum care to protect the interest of New Delhi in the distribution of international river waters.Earlier, replying to the main question, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said, New Delhi has been on the constant watch in the matter and verifying the facts about storage facilities in the river Brahmaputra. At the same time, the Minister suggested that the Arunachal Pradesh and Assam should make maximum efforts to harness the river waters.
