China: Landslide killed more than 96 in Gansu

More than 96 people were killed and 2,000 were missing in the landslides triggered by torrential rains in northwest China's, Gansu province today. It was the latest disaster to hit the country in the wake of massive flooding. Diemujiangteng, head of the Zhouqu county in Gannan Tibetan, Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu, said that the torrential rains began to fall last night followed by the landslides and the power cuts. This county lies in the valley and the river flows in the middle. He said that the water of Bailong River flowed into the county seat and many people were trapped. The sludge was the biggest problem for rescue operations as it was too thick to walk or drive through. The water in the barrier lake began to flow to the downstream after an initial explosion and a total of 19,000 people living in Shawan and Lianghekou townships downstream had been evacuated.
