China today expressed its keen interest to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Bangladesh to establish road and rail connectivity between the two countries. The Governor of Yunnan province of China Mr. Qin Guangrong expressed his government’s desire when he called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office in Dhaka on Sunday. Briefing reporters about the meeting, the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said that Mr. Qin said that the Chinese government will extend all necessary cooperation to establish the tri-nation high way connecting Chiitagong in Bangladesh to Kunming in China via Myanmar. The Bangladesh Prime Minister said that the proposed highway could play a vital role in increasing bilateral trade and commerce. She also informed the visiting Chinese Governor who is on a two day visit to Bangladesh that her government has decided in principle to open a consular office in Kunming. The Prime Minister also stressed on the need to enhance cooperation in the fields of agriculture, education, civil aviation, tourism, power and energy between Bangladesh and China as well as Yunnan province. Bangladesh’s efforts to establish road and rail connectivity with Kunming is part of its initiative to establish regional and international connectivity with its neighbouring countries in order to take advantage of its geographical location and earn revenues from transit trade by opening up its ports which are currently underutilized.
