China, India signed cooperation agreement on climate change

India and China have signed a major agreement on cooperation in addressing climate change. The five year agreement which was signed by the Environment and Forest Minister Mr. Jairam Ramesh and the Chinese Minister for National Development and Reforms Commission Mr. Xie Zhehua in New Delhi today calls for cooperation on various issues related to dealing with the impact of Climate Change at variousl levels. Speaking on the occasion the Mr Zhehua said that China considers India as a sincere and devoted friend. The Chinese Minister said that he was hopeful that the two countries will make positve contribution at the Copenhagen summit to make it a success. Mr. Jairam Ramesh spoke of similar positions taken by both on climate change and said that the two will collaborate to ensure a fair and equitable outcome of the Copenhagen Summit in keeping with the principles of Rio convention, Kyoto Protocol and Bali Action Plan. A joint workshop is also being held on National Action Plan on climate change to share their experiences on various scientific, technical and policy aspects of climate change. Under the agreement signed today the two neighbours decided to set up India China partnership on combating climate change and in this connection both sides will hold regular ministerial consultations to deepen their cooperation. An India -China working group will also be established for exchange of views on annual basis on matteres related to international negotiations on climate change, respective domestic policies and in the implementation of cooperative projects in the field of climate change. The two sides will also increase their cooperation in technology development relating to reduction of green house gas emission in the fields of energy conservation, clean coal, afforestation, sustainable habibat and transportation among other issues. They will also enhance their cooperation mitigating the impact of climate change. Joint research, capacity building, public private partnership are some of other aspects of Climate change in which the two sides will cooperate.
