China helped Pak with nuke knowhow: AQ Khan

China provided Pakistan knowhow and weapons grade uranium for making two nuclear bombs in 1982. Leading American daily, The Washington Post, quoting disgraced Pakistani scientist A Q Khan, says that this deliberate act of proliferation was part of a secret nuclear deal struck in 1976 between Chinese leader Mao Zedong and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto. Khan wrote in a undisclosed 11-page narrative about the Pakistani bomb programme that on his personal request, China gifted 50- kilograms of weapon-grade enriched uranium to Pakistan. The daily said it obtained Khan’s detailed notes from Simon Henderson, a former journalist with the Financial Times who is now a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. US officials worry that Khan later shared related Chinese design information with Iran, in 2003. Libya also confirmed obtaining it from Khan’s clandestine network.
