China bags first gold medal in shooting in London Olympics

China's Yi Siling has become the first gold medallist of the 2012 London Olympic Games. Yi Siling won the 10 metre air rifle shooting event. Two other Gold medals were also decided today. Men's 10 metre air pistol gold went to South Korea's Jonoh Jinn and in Men's cycling Road race event, Kazakhstan claimed the yelllow metal through Alexander Vinokorov. For India, Shuttler Parupalli Kashyap first round win in Men's singles over Yuhan Tan of Belgium was the sole saving grace on the first day of competitions on Saturday. Kashyap warded off Tan's challenge with 21-14, 21-12 victory in only 38 minutes. In mixed doubles, the pair of V Diju and Jwala Gutta lost their opening group game. Elsewhere too, the country faced setbacks with the men's archery team getting eliminated at the pre-quarterfinal stage. The trio will now be seen in action in the individual elimination rounds that will commence on Monday. Woman paddler Ankita Das made her exit without making aripple.Rower Swran Singh also came fourth in his heats in single sculls but has a second chance in the repechage. In Men's Boxing 56 kg division, Shiva Thapa lost to Mexican Oscar Valdez Fierro 9-14. Off the field, the presence of an nidentified lady beside flag bearer Sushil Kumar in the Indian contingent during Friday's opening ceremony prompted the country's miffed officials to take up the issue with the Games organisers. Acting chef de mission of the Indian contingent Brig P K Muralidharan Raja said the lady had no business to walk in with the Indian contingent and said the Indian contingent is taking up the issue with the organisers.
