China today said Iran should not develop any capability to produce nuclear weapons, but asserted that all avenues need to be exhausted before imposing new sanctions on it through the United Nations.China's ambassador to the United Nations Office in Geneva, He Yafei, said that China is very much for safeguarding and strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regimebut Iran, as a member of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is entitled to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. He said, the doors of compromise through negotiations and diplomacy are not closed.His comments follow British Foreign Secretary David Miliband's visitand talks between top Chinese leaders and former US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger.He said that China had been talking to Iran constantly and urging the country to agree to a proposal by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as a first step to solve Tehran's controversial nuclear issue.
