China announces plans to provide 10 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to COVAX

China announced on Wednesday that the country plans to provide 10 million doses of a Covid-19 vaccine to developing countries through the global vaccine sharing initiative COVAX. Chinese Foreign ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin said at a press conference that the decision was made in answer to the World Health Organization's (WHO) call to help plug a significant shortfall in vaccinations this year, particularly in February and March. However, he did not give any details on which Chinese vaccine the country is planning to provide to COVAX, or whether it was a donation. Only one of the vaccines, made by Sinopharm, has been approved for general use within China amid concerns on lack of transparency in phase-3 clinical trial data.
''
'' China joined the COVAX in October. China has already struck deals for large numbers of doses of its own vaccines, mainly with developing countries, far exceeding the 10 million doses it is providing to COVAX. Its global efforts are seen by experts as an attempt to boost China's reputation as it seeks to repair its image after the first cases of the coronavirus were detected in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019.
''
'' COVAX is expected to start distributing vaccines in February, mainly to poor and middle-income countries. It has a target of procuring 2 billion doses by end of 2021, with an aim to vaccinate 20% of world's population by the end of the year.
''
