Chilly winds and freezing temperatures continued to sweep North India. At least six people died due to severe cold conditions in the northern parts of the country. Four persons lost their lives due to severe cold conditions in Uttar Pradesh, while an elderly person died of chilling temperature in Jammu and Kashmir's Jammu district. The winter chill also claimed its first victim in the national capital with an unidentified man found dead near a Metro pillar in west Delhi. According to MET department, the minimum temperature was recorded 6.1 degree Celsius today. Dense fog has affected the movement of trains and vehicular traffic in north India. It has also led airlines to cancel, divert or delay several domestic and international flights putting hundreds of passengers to hardship. Meanwhile, Authorities have relaxed the visibility criteria. Civil Aviation secretary S N A Zaidi reviewed the situation with stakeholders including officials of airlines, DIAL, Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Met Department in New Delhi on Sunday. He later told reporters that the Ministry has taken a number of steps to ensure that during fog and low visibility period, the safety of flight operations are maintained and inconvenience to passengers is minimized. Mr Zaidi said that under the new rules put in place, the visibility range has been brought down from 175 meters to 150 meters for operation of large aircraft and 150 meters to 125 meters for smaller planes. In Uttar Pradesh, the foggy weather condition continues to disrupt rail and road traffic. The biting cold conditions continued unabated in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. AIR correspondent reports that Leh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 12.4 degree Celsius. The famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir registered a minimum of minus 5.8 deg C, making it the coldest place in the valley.Rajasthan also continued to remain in the grip of biting cold with Churu recording the lowest temperature of 2.3 deg C in the state. Normal life was disrupted in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh as severe cold waves swept the region.
