In Chile, authorities have said that about 20 wildfires are spreading quickly in the central region of the country. The National Forestry Corporation chief said, in Santiago, that hundreds of people have been evacuated and the fires has affected about 19,000 hectares.

He said the flames are nearing a village about 70 kilometers north-east of the capital. The out-of-control fires began last week amid a heat wave and strong winds. Country's Meteorology Service has said the fires are likely to spread to southern places next week because of the high temperature.
