Children's Day being celebrated on the occassion on Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru's 122nd birth anniversary.

A grateful nation today paid homage to the country's first Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru on his 122nd birth anniversary. Nehru was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. Nehru's birthday is also celebrated as Children's Day as he was fond of kids. Several functions were organised to celebrate the Day.

On this occassion, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath awarded 27 children with the National Child Awards for Exceptional Achievement in various fields including academics, painting music dance and arts. First time a 4 year girl was awarded for Blogging. The Minister also gave away National Awards for child Welfare and Rajiv Gandhi Manav Seva Awards to different NGOs and individuals.

Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister Kumari Selja celebrated the Day with about 700 school children including the less-privileged children at the famous Humayun’s tomb in New Delhi. Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights Shantha Sinha called for effective implementation of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act on the occassion.

National Book Trust has organised a week long book exhibition in schools across Delhi and National Capital Region. A fair was held for children where they participated in several competitions including Story telling, poster and painting making and quiz competitions along with various cultural activities.
