Chidambaram’s disappointment over IIP

Expressing disappointment over the industrial production numbers, Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said, the government would continue efforts to find practical solutions to boost the output.

He said, the IIP, Index of Industrial Production, estimates reveal that the performance of the economy continues to be disappointing. He said, only eight industry groups out of 22, have shown positive growth, while the General Index for July, 2012, over the corresponding month last year, is positive at 0.1 per cent. He said, it is too early to claim that this is a sign of a turn around.

Mr. Chidambaram said, sector-wise performance reveals a mixed picture. He observed that there are gains in some areas but there are slippages in some other areas including electricity and consumer goods. The Finance Minister added that, no clear pattern has emerged yet.
