Finance Minister P Chidambaram has asked service tax defaulters to come out clean by taking advantage of Service Tax Voluntary Compliance Encouragement Scheme. Releasing a booklet, Frequently Asked Questions, on the scheme in New Delhi today Chidambaram said the scheme offers no penalty – no interest, provides one time opportunity to the defaulters to come clean. He said over ten lakh defaulters have been identified. He said 1400 defaulters have already filed their declarations amounting to 650 crores rupees. The Finance Minister hoped that the scheme will result in substantial disclosure by non-filers.AIR correspondent reports that the scheme aims at encouraging disclosure of Tax dues and compliance of Service Tax by the persons who have not paid service tax dues for the period from October 2007 to December 2012, either on account of ignorance of law or otherwise. On payment of the tax dues relating to that period, there will be complete waiver of interest and penalty.
