Chidambaram warns Naxals of stringent action if they do not shun violence

Home Minister P Chidambaram has warned Naxals of stringent action if they do not shun violence. He asserted that the security forces will continue to engage the Maoists till they give up violence. Mr. Chidambaram said that as long as the CPI(Maoists) believe in an armed liberation struggle, the government has no option but to ask the security forces to apprehend and arrest them.<br/> <br/>Mr Chidambaram said, no government can accept the theory of an armed liberation struggle. The Home Minister said the Centre will help the state governments to discuss with the CPI(Maoists) all issues concerned including developmental matters like neglect, deprivation, corruption and government structure. In reply to a question, he said that there is no evidence to indicate that Naxals in India are being funded by any foreign country. <br/> <br/>Meanwhile the Government is contemplating the use of air-power against Maoists to protect his choppers and pilots from Naxal attacks. The Air Force Chief P.V. Naik said, the rules of engagements in such situation will be stringent. <br/><br/>The issue is likely to be discussed when Cabinet Committee on security meeting today to consider the IAF's request for permission to fire when under attack by Naxals. The Defence Minister Mr. A.K. Antony appeared to suggest that such an engagement may be unavoidable. He has said that the Government, however, wants to minimise armed force operations for the internal security. <br/> <br/>
