Chidambaram visits Muvan Lai designated camp in Manipur

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday visited the Muvan Lai designated camp of the Kuki underground organization – United People’s Front (UPF) at Teikot under Shinghat Sub-Division in Churachandpur District of Manipur.The Front is one the two umbrella organizations of Kuki outlawed outfits under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement with the government. He was accompanied by State Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and Director General of Police Y. Joykumar Singh. The visit is assumed to be significant as the ongoing peace process of the government with Kuki militant groups is coming towards a political dialogue. Later, he also met the members of the Autonomous District Council, Churachandpur and community leaders of the District at the Khuga Multi-purpose Project in the district. Speaking at the gathering, Mr. Chidambaram said, there is less violence in Manipur this year in comparison to the last year.AIR Imphal correspondent reports, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said, there are least numbers of civilian death and killing of security forces this year in comparison to the past few years. He, however, also admitted that there are still problems in containing violence in the state. He said, there are still problems of extortion, kidnapping and targeting non-Manipuris who are working in the state for their livelihood. The Union Home Minister also said, North-East as a whole is in peace now except Manipur and Assam. Appealing to all underground organizations to come forward for peaceful negotiations, he said, there can be no development and good governance without peace. He further said, there is no problem that cannot be resolved through peace talks.
