Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that a high level central team will visit Puducherry and Tamil Nadu in the next day or two to make an exact assessment of damage unleashed by cyclone Thane that left a trail of death and destruction .Mr. Chidambaram was speaking to newsmen after he went around Puducherry town and villages in the periphery of the town and met with victims of nature’s fury.The Home Minister said that more than 17,000 hectares of standing crops of paddy, sugar cane, betel leaves, banana and cashew perished to the fury of the gushing winds.Mr. Chidambaram accompanied by Union Minister of state in Prime Minister’s office Mr. V. Narayansamy, said that they would meet the Prime minister and the Finance Minister and brief them about the cyclone damage to the union territory.Mr. Chidambaram gave a patient hearing to the victims who alleged poor relief work and complained of absence of even basic amenities.AIR correspondent reports that more than 70 percent of villages in Puducherry continue to be without electricity for the last four days. An official from the electricity department said that it could take a few more days to restore power to the villages.Puduchery government has made an initial estimate of a loss of 2500 crore rupees due to devastation by the cyclone.Later, Union Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram also visited, Chinnankanakuppam and market area of Cuddalore old town Tamil Nadu which suffered massive damages because of the Cyclone.Mr. Chidambaram said that the central team would be sent after receiving assessment reports from the Tamil Nadu Government.AIR Chennai correspondent reports that Cuddalore virtually remained cut off from the state as the connecting roads were severely damaged due to the cyclone.Electricity and telecommunication structures were thrown off as the cyclonic storm had ransacked the coastal hamlets. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Ms. J. Jayalalithaa is expected to take up a meeting on the situation later today.
