Chidambaram unveils foundation stone for ICP at Attari

The Union Home Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram has unveiled the foundation stone for the construction of an Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari, Amritsar in Punjab in the presence of the Chief Minister of Punjab, Mr. Parkash Singh Badal, on Saturday.<br/><br/>The Attari Integrated Check Post is the first ICP among thirteen to be constructed in India, where construction is being undertaken.<br/><br/>Addressing the gathering Mr. Chidambaam said that the 21st Century is of Trade and Commerce, so the scheme of constructing ICPs in eight states in the country was designed to boost the trade with neighbouring countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal.<br/><br/>Later, speaking to media, the Home Minister said that although Pakistan has not given the Most Favoured Nation Status to India as yet despite India having given to it earlier. <br/><br/>He said, it does not mean that India should stop trade with that country. Mr. Chidambaram said that he has been apprised of the problems of the border area people by Mr. Badal and the Centre will look into it. <br/><br/>AIR Correspondent Rajesh Bali reports that answering a query on providing amnesty to Sikhs living in other countries, the Home Minister said that if the Punjab government will also draw a scheme, like that of Jammu and Kashmir. <br/><br/>He also said that he would look into the continuation to the implementation of disturbed area act in Punjab despite peace having been restored in the state way back in 1995.<br/><br/>He said that Punjab is by and large peaceful now and it would be improper to state that the threat of return of terrorism looms large over the state.
