Strongly defending the Liberhan Commission Report, the Home Minister’ Mr. P. Chidambaram today made it clear that the government may review the charge sheets filed in connection with the demolition of disputed structure to add the names of some more accused.

Replying the marathon debate on the Report in the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Chidambaram said that charge sheets have already been filed in three criminal cases and they are proceeding in the court. Mr. Chidambaram said that the government will also probe into the large amount of funds collected by the organisations associated with the so called movement as CBI has collected enough information in this connection. Giving the details of the sequence of events that led to the demolition, the Home Minister while quoting extensively from the report exhorted that it was a pre-planned conspiracy by the BJP and Sangh parivar.

Referring to the impact of the demolition, Mr. Chidambaram said, it has damaged India’s civilisational ethos and led to a large scale communal violence. The Home Minister added that three months after the incident, 2019 persons belonging to different communities were killed and over 7700 injured. Mr. Chidambaram said that the after effects of this incident are being felt even now. He cautioned the opposition BJP that the politics of religious majoritarianism is a dangerous trend and it will prove costly for the country. He said that the essence of plural democracy is inclusiveness and equality for all religions, castes and creeds. Mr. Chidambaram added that the people have rejected the idea propagated by the BJP in 2004 and 2009 and supported the philosophy of religious co-existence, voting UPA to power.

AIR Parliamentary correspondent reports that Mr. Chidambaram’s reply was marred by interruptions and heated exchanges between the treasury and the opposition benches.
