Chidambaram proposes 3 amendments to AFSPA

Union Ministry of Home Affairs has proposed three amendments to Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) which are under the consideration of Cabinet Committee on Security Affairs. This was stated by the Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram in an informal chat with reporters in Jammu today. He said that once the decision is taken by the Cabinet Committee on Security Affairs, the Home Ministry will announce it. He further said that Interlocutors Report on Jammu and Kashmir will be made public after Cabinet Committee on Security Affairs reviews the whole report.

The Home Minister who was on a day long visit to Jammu also reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and paid obeisance at the Vaishno Devi Shrine. Accompanied by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Chidambaram took stock of the security situation and law and order at a high-level meeting held at Chief Minister's residence in Jammu. The meeting reviewed various measures on anti-militancy front, such as cross-border infiltration, synergy between various security agencies and anti-militancy operations. Senior officials from security forces, police and intelligence agencies participated in the meeting.Earlier in the day, the Home Minister paid obeisance at the cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi in Trikuta hills in Reasi district. Chidambaram, who arrived this morning from New Delhi for the day-long meeting, flew to Vaishnodevi shrine amid tight security arrangements.
