Chidambaram makes fresh offer of dialogue with Naxals

Home Minister P Chidambaram made a fresh offer of dialogue with Naxals if they abjure violence. On his first visit to the heart of Naxal territory in West Bengal yesterday Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has ruled out military action against the Naxals saying state police and paramilitary forces alone will be deployed to fight them. . <br/><br/>Mr. Chidambaram visited Lalgarh in West Midnapore district for an assessment of the situation and review of the anti-Maoist drive. After an hour-long meeting with top police and administrative officials in Lalgarh the Home Minister told reporters that certain weaknesses in anti-Maoist drive need to be rectified.<br/><br/>On the law and order situation in the state,which has also witnessed clashes between the activists of ruling Left and Opposition Trinamool Congress, Mr. Chidambaram said that during discussions with Chief Minister in Kolkata, he has told Mr. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee that the bucks stops with him . If the buck does not stop, it is a failure of the administrative machinery. The Home Minister said that he had told the chief minister that he wanted inter-party clashes to end. <br/><br/>Mr. Chidambaram termed the Naxals as cowards who are hiding in the forests and slammed them for using tribal group People's Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) as a front organisation. Expressing concern over the "direct or indirect" support to Naxals by PCPA, the Home Minister said if they have a genuine problem, he is willing to lend his good offices for ensuring talks between them and the state government. Mr. Chidambaram said, he has appealed to the villagers not to support the Maoists, which they were doing out of fear. He also said that intelligence reports suggest that Naxals are constantly regrouping to carry out low-intensity conflict and that there is a need for constant vigilance in the fight against them.<br/><br/>
