Chidambaram denies allegation in AIRCEL- Maxis deal

Home Minister P Chidambaram on Thursdaycategorically denied that either he or his family members have shares in the telecom company AIRCEL or Maxis. Making a statement in the Lok Sabha in response to the allegations by BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, Mr. Chidambaram termed it unfortunate. He regretted that the House has been misused by a senior opposition leader. Mr. Chidambaram said that no notice was served to him under relevant rules and procedures. The House was adjourned till 4 PM amidst noisy scenes by BJP members who were raising slogans against Mr Chidambaram. They also demanded his resignation.

Earlier, the Loksabha was adjourned till 2.00 pm following disruption of proceedings following sharp reaction by the opposition to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's remarks. The opposition benches were on their feet after BJP leader Yaswant Sinha raised the issue of alleged corruption in the Aircel Maxis deal. They also alleged the role of the then Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in the deal. The AIADMK members also members also trooped in to well of the house. Several members were also on their feet on the issue of shortage of jute bags.

When Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee rose to reply, the uproar continued. Mr. Mukherjee objected to the raising of the issue repeatedly again and again by the opposition. This led to some heated exchanges between the Finance Minister and the opposition. Sensing the mood of the house, the Speaker had initially adjourned the house till
2.00 pm.

The Rajya Sabha also witnessed two adjournments following complaints of leakage of gas in the House by the members.
